OUR STORY
Delta Gamma was founded on Christmas Day, 1873 in Oxford, Mississippi, at the Lewis School for Girls, by three young women who were unable to go home for the Christmas break. Together, Anna Boyd, Mary Comfort and Eva Webb created a club of "mutual helpfulness." They chose the Greek letters Delta and Gamma because of their desire to "Do Good." It remains Delta Gamma's motto today and a driving force in all we do. Delta Gamma is a sisterhood built on a commitment to making the world better through not only service, but also a deep appreciation for each individual. What started with three women in Oxford, Mississippi, has since grown into an international Fraternity with 150 collegiate chapters and more than 215 alumnae groups.
The Gamma Alpha chapter was installed at the University of Tennessee on May 10, 1947, and has been a central part of campus ever since! Gamma Alpha was the second Delta Gamma chapter to host Anchorsplash, our annual main philanthropy event benefiting Service for Sight, and Gamma Alpha is credited to helping make Anchorsplash the successful event that it is nationally today. In 2014, we moved into our beautiful home in Sorority Village! Recently, Gamma Alpha has won Panhellenic Chapter of the Year at Tennessee in 2018, 2019, and 2023, along with our 2022 President, Nicole Mickels, won Chapter President of the Year in 2023!
